Nancy Holroyd

Small organism sequencing

Nancy began working with Carol Churcher in Bart Barrell's lab at the Medical Research Council in 1993. The team then moved to the Sanger Institute where Nancy worked as a pathogen finisher. The role of a pathogen finisher at that time was to produce high quality, complete genomic sequences of pathogens. Nancy then decided to study zoology in order to gain formal scientific qualifications. In 1997 Nancy returned to the Sanger Institute where she worked on many different organisms that cause diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis and meningitis. Having led the Faculty Small Sequencing team, which provides a tailored sequencing service for all the faculty groups onsite, Nancy moved on to lead one of the large genome finishing groups working on organisms such as zebrafish, pig and tomato. Currently, Nancy coordinates projects aimed at sequencing the genomes of helminths (parasitic worms) of medical, veterinary and scientific importance.
