IT Systems

Phil Butcher worked in the commercial sector before joining the Sanger Institute in 1993. At the time, there were only 12-14 people on site. Phil set up the first work stations and continued to grow the IT Systems Support Group which now has around 30 staff involved in installing and managing the IT systems for the institute as well as supporting the 850 staff on a daily basis. Phil is now Head of IT which encompasses the Systems, Web and Database teams. One major focus of the team is to support project groups such as the Ensembl group who created the Ensembl genome browser - which in 2006 received 7837 visits - in addition to providing a wide range of services including technology evaluation, hardware / software purchasing advice, programming assistance and user training.
