Genomics Lite: What is a gene?

Our guest speaker for this Genomics Lite is Zachary Ardern a Research Fellow at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, exploring what we still don't know about genes.

In this Genomics Lite session, Zachary will talk about his work aiming to understand the fundamental questions of biology – “what is a gene?” and “what does it do?”, taking a look at the complex world of genes and what we still don’t know about them. During the session we will explore how the answers to these questions will impact research on evolution, COVID and beyond.

About our speaker:

Zachary Ardern, Research Fellow, Wellcome Sanger Institute

Zachary is a research fellow in the Parasites and Microbes programme at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, researching the evolution of new and uncharacterised genes in bacteria. He is originally from New Zealand where he studied biology and philosophy and wrote his PhD thesis on experimental evolution; before coming to the Sanger he worked as a researcher in Germany for five years. His research is motivated by an interest in the big questions of how and why evolution works as it does.
